Health benefits of standing desks
Standing desks
The bulk of my average day consists of sitting at work and most of my recreation time consists of sitting at home. Throw commuting and sleeping into the mix and you are looking at a staggering 20 hours a day of inactivity. Sounds familiar?
I am going through a little bit of a health kick currently and I have been doing some investigation into ways to lose a bit of weight without actually going through the usual rigours of going to the gym.
The good news is that my investigation has rediscovered the benefits of standing desks.
It has been estimated that you burn 144 calories every 3 hours, just by standing! Yes, you read that right, and that is just one of the fringe benefits. Not only does it improve muscle tone in your back, legs and bum, it also boosts your metabolism, meaning that any exercise you DO end up doing, has a greater effect. Think about it: of the 20 hours you are inactive, there is about 10 hours where you can actually DO something without actually putting much effort in.
In essence, by changing to a standing desk, you can burn 480 calories a day. That’s the equivalent of an hour's run, just by standing at your desk instead of sitting.

We already covered Standing desks in one of our projects; however I have been thinking on designs and I have realised that a slight modification to our previous design will give you more space and flexibility.
Using the same telescopic mounting pole but changing the crossbeam to use a Kee Lite aluminium L25-7 fitting as the pivot and a L68-7 to mount the work shelf will allow you to position the desk anywhere, even in the corner of the room.
If you wanted to kick the calorie count into overdrive, you could mount your standing desk over a treadmill or exercise bike, adjusting the system to the different eye levels. A simple loosening and re-tightening of 2 grub screws on the supporting fitting is all that you need to do.
There are literally hundreds of designs that are possible.
If losing weight isn't a primary concern, a standing desk can be a great space saving idea!
