DIY DJ tables and home recording studio desks

In this article we will show you how to build the perfect DIY DJ table using tube and fittings. The Kee Klamp tube and fittings system allows you to construct a DJ desk that suits your exact requirements and allows you to store all the relevant equipment for your studio: computer, DAW (digital audio workstation), speakers, microphone stands, etc.

Here are 4 examples of DJ desks that you can build at home:

Tips & tricks on building your custom DJ desk

Before diving in, here are a few tips and tricks that we hope will help you when designing your own DJ desk.

Height, width and depth of the desk

The width and depth of your desk are important when building a custom setup. It is certainly better to go overboard than to end up with a desk that is too short or too narrow. We recommend going for a width of at least 800 mm.

You need to take into consideration how many computer screens you plan on using and how much space they take up. For example, if you have more than two screens, especially 24 inch ones (or larger), they will be so big that you won't have enough space for your speakers.

The beauty of using a modular system is that you can keep reconfiguring the structure as your equipment collection grows. For example, in one of the DIY desk suggestions below, one of our customers built an extra shelf for his monitors which he sat on 8 mini Kee Klamp legs, thus increasing the storage space.

You can use the space under this shelf for storing MIDI controllers, audio interfaces, equalizers or just stationery.

Sliding compartments for keyboards

When choosing the height of your DJ unit, you also need to take into account whether you need a sliding compartment for your keyboards for example. Adding a sliding compartment without taking the space it takes into consideration when choosing the height of your desk will interfere with your legs when you are trying to comfortably sit down. Ensure that you increase the total height of your structure if you decide to have this type of feature.

4 DJ table examples that you can build at home

You may be dreaming of a custom-made desk for your equipment, but you're not quite ready to take the plunge; maybe you don't have the right tools, or you're not a DIYer. To help, we put together 4 DIY studio desk examples that you can build at home.

Project 1: Kee Klamp DJ table for DJ Worx

DJ gear company DJ Worx decided to use Kee Klamp fittings and tube to build a series of custom DJ tables and photography desks for their studio in West Yorkshire.

The company was looking for a system that would help them build custom desks and tables (some including storing space underneath) that would accommodate various pieces of equipment, as well as complement the office décor. The tables also needed to be moved around for various projects, which meant that they required the installation of castors.

DJ Worx went for the Standard Table Frame Kit and added Braked Swivel Castors for the footing. With the Standard frame, the flanges attach to the table top using screws (this requires drilling into the wood).

Shelf supports were added to the frame to create storage space underneath some of the tables. We used 10-7 fittings and additional galvanised tube to create the support for the wooden shelves.

Specs:

  • Specifications (frame only)
  • Height (without castors): 1000 mm
  • Length: 1200 mm
  • Depth: 800 mm

Assembly:

  • Hex key

What's included:

  • Tube and fittings
  • Braked castors

    What's not:

    • Wooden planks
    • Fixings for the wooden planks

Project 2: Home recording studio desk

Here is another example of a DIY structure that we liked: this rolling recording desk with a microphone stand. This is an easily transportable and customizable studio desk. The wooden tray on the top has been designed with storage capacity for recording equipment, a computer and a small keyboard.

The castors allow you to move the structure around when needed. The unique feature of this desk is the microphone holder that extends to the left of the desk. The arm can be extended or moved outward by loosening and tightening the set screw. This customer painted the galvanized fittings black in an effort to conceal the cables and achieve the look he was looking for.

      Specs:

      • Specifications for the table frame
      • Height: 1000 mm (excluding castors)
      • Length: 1200 mm
      • Depth: 800 mm

      Assembly:

      • Hex key

      What's included:

      • Fittings and tube
      • Braked castors

        What's not:

        • Desk top and wooden sections
        • Fixings for the wooden sections

Project 3: Custom storage unit for music equipment

Most pianists know that having the right posture is essential for playing comfortably. However, getting the right posture can be difficult when using desks that have not been specially designed for playing.

That's why David, keyboardist and DIY fan, asked for our help. He was looking for a desk that could be built exactly to his level for playing the keyboard. He also needed a structure that was big and sturdy enough to support his huge vintage equipment. Kee Klamp looked like the perfect solution.

Here is what David had to say about it:

"I built a rolling desk with a bookshelf underneath. I needed a workstation for my modular synthesizer, keyboard and the rest of my audio equipment. The height of the desk is lower than that of a normal desk to allow me to use my keyboard comfortably. The bespoke solid maple top is 4cm thick and the shelf is 2cm thick. I also liked the fact that the tube was pre-cut and I just needed to screw everything together."

          Specs:

          • Specifications for desk frame
          • Height: 1000 mm (excluding castors)
          • Length: 1200 mm
          • Depth: 800 mm

          Assembly:

          • Hex key

          What's included:

          • Fittings and tube
          • braked castors

            What's not:

            • Wooden planks
            • Fixings for wooden planks

Project 4: DJ desk for home studio

Here is another DJ desk example built by Vincent.

"My home studio also serves as my office and guest bedroom, so I had to make it work. The structure needed to be able to fit as much equipment per m² as possible. I like to stand up while making music, so I built my setup around a two-shelf steel table with heavy-duty castors. The lower shelf contains two studio racks.”

              Specs:

              • Specifications for DJ table
              • Height: 1200 mm + 200 mm
              • Length: 1200 mm
              • Depth: 800 mm

              Assembly:

              • Hex key

              What's included:

              • Tube and fittings

                What's not:

                • Wooden planks
                • Fixings for wooden planks
