Kee Klamp DIY storage unit for the living room

Kee Klamp diy media storage project

Programmes like ‘George Clarke’s Amazing spaces’ and ‘The house that 100k built’ inspired Stuart to build his own relaxing space in his home in Bristol. Having decided against ready-made flat-packed furniture, Stuart built this media storage unit using pipe, fittings and OSB flooring boards.

Materials used

  • Pipes and fittings: Stuart loves all things industrial, therefore the choice of chunky pipes and exposed bolts came naturally
  • OSB flooring: Although his initial thought was to go with reclaimed wood, Stuart did not feel that this would be the right choice for him. However, while visiting Openspace in Bristol one day, he noticed they used OSB flooring and immediately felt that this was the solution that he was looking for. Once he found a supplier, he decided to keep the manufacturer’s branding on the boards, just to give his new furniture a bit more character.

Design

The final solution was this long L-shaped bench that would fill up an entire wall of the room.

Stuart measured the space, making sure that the shelves were at an equal distance from one another. He then decided on how much wood he needed and how many tubes and fittings would be required for his project.

Stuart wanted to use as few materials as possible, while utilising enough metal to ensure that his structure was stable.

In the making

Stuart thought that the building process was pretty much straight forward; while he thinks that the media unit is not perfect, he loves how it has got its own quirks.

Steps

  • Have the metal pipes cut to size
  • Use a circular saw to cut the wood to size
  • Drill large 38mm holes for the tubes and flanges to slot through
  • Drill 12 mm holes for the bolts
  • Put everything together
